I Tried Gentle Parenting for 30 Days: Here's What No One Tells You

Okay, real talk? Nobody warned me that the hardest part of gentle parenting wouldn't be my toddler's tantrums. It would be me.

Me, running on four hours of sleep. Me, reheating the same coffee three times. Me, trying not to become the “because I said so” mom I swore I'd never be.

So I tried gentle parenting for 30 days. And here's my honest review.

Wait, what even is gentle parenting?

Quick definition, because the internet has made this confusing: gentle parenting is not permissive parenting. It's positive discipline. You still have boundaries. You still say no. You just don't use fear to get there.

Soft voice, same rules. That's the whole thing.

3 things that actually worked (I was shocked too)

1. Get on their level. Literally.

I started crouching down to eye level before saying anything. Sounds small. But a two year old cannot process a lecture from six feet above them. Our tantrums got shorter almost immediately. Try it once and tell me I'm wrong.

2. Name the feeling first. Fix second.

“You're mad because the blocks fell.” That's it. That's the trick. Half the meltdown evaporates the second they feel understood. Toddler tantrums aren't manipulation, they're a tiny nervous system with no off switch. Once I actually believed that, everything got easier.

3. Repair, don't punish.

Confession time: I yelled. And then I apologized. To a two year old. It felt ridiculous. It also worked. Here's what I'm learning: kids don't need us to be perfect. They need to watch us mess up and fix it. That's where emotional regulation actually comes from.

The part no one posts about

Gentle parenting is a practice, not a personality trait. Some days I nailed it. Some days I was exactly the mom I said I'd never become.

The difference was never perfection. It was just trying again the next morning.

Does that sound familiar? If you're reading this at 11:00 PM after a day that broke you a little, you're not behind. You're in it. Same as me.

So did it work?

My toddler still tests me. She still has world ending meltdowns over the wrong color cup. But I'm not the same mom I was 30 days ago. I pause more. I yell less. I repair faster.

And honestly? That was the whole point.

Have you tried gentle parenting? What worked for you, and what completely flopped? I want to know I'm not the only one figuring this out in real time.

I break all of this down on Instagram too, here's the reel where I learned most of this while filming it.

I hope this helped 🤍 See you soon,

Vish.
